About Amr Diab
Biography / Discography
Amr Diab (Amr Abdel Basset Abdel Azeez Diab) is an Egyptian pop singer and composer born in 1961, recognized as the best-selling Middle Eastern artist and known globally as the “King of Arabic Pop.” He is credited with pioneering Mediterranean music, a style that blends Western pop production with Arabic and Egyptian rhythms, earning him international recognition far beyond the Arabic-speaking world.
Diab launched his recording career in 1983 with his debut album Ya Tareeq and released numerous records throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. His breakthrough came in 1996 with Nour El Ain under Alam El Phan, winning his first World Music Award for Best Selling Middle Eastern Artist and achieving major commercial success. He was the first Egyptian artist to embrace high-tech music videos as a creative medium in 1992 and collaborated with regional and international acts including Khaled and Angela Dimitriou during this period.
From 2004 onward, Diab released albums with Rotana Records and later Nay Records, maintaining consistent chart presence across the Middle East. His 2014 album Shoft El Ayam achieved a historic milestone as the first release by an Egyptian or Middle Eastern performer to reach number one on Billboard’s World Albums chart. Diab has received seven World Music Awards, one Guinness World Record for Most World Music Awards for Best Selling Middle Eastern Artist, and six African Music Awards. Rolling Stone ranked his signature song “Tamally Maak” at number one on their 2024 list of the “50 Best Arabic Pop Songs of the 21st Century.”
