Biography / Discography
Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas is an American singer, songwriter and actress specializing in contemporary R&B and hip-hop. Born in Glen Cove, New York in 1980, she rose to prominence in the early 2000s after being discovered by record producer Irv Gotti and signing with Murder Inc. Records, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings, in 2002.
Her breakthrough year came in 2002 when she was featured on two major singles: “What’s Luv?” by Fat Joe (peaked #2 on the Billboard Hot 100) and “Always on Time” by Ja Rule (peaked #1). That same year, her debut single “Foolish” topped the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first female artist to occupy the top two chart positions simultaneously. Her self-titled debut album (2002) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, achieved triple platinum certification, and won Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards. The album spawned additional top-40 singles including “Happy” and “Baby,” establishing her as a major commercial force.
