About Children of the Night
Biography / Discography
Choreographer and dancer of Staatsbalett Berlin Alexander Abdukarimov staged the modern ballet Children of the Night at the National Opera. The leading roles are performed by the prima ballerina of the National Opera Ekaterina Kukhar and Alexander Stoyanov. The premiere took place on March 17 and 18, 2018 in Kiev.
Choreographer Alexander Abdukarimov is a student of Nacho Duato, one of the most famous choreographers in the world, now the art director of the Berlin State Ballet. In Ukraine, Abdukarimov, who choreographed in Berlin, Cologne, Madrid, worked for the first time. He came at the invitation of the Ukrainian star couple Ekaterina Kukhar and Alexander Stoyanov. The guys got to know each other thanks to the ballet “The Master and Margarita”: several years ago Kuhar and Stoyanov danced it in France, where Abdukarimov saw them. A few years later, from this acquaintance, the ballet “Children of the Night” was born, which was staged at the National Opera in Kiev.
“Children of the Night” is a ballet about mythical androgynous creatures. In ancient Greek mythology, androgynes – creatures who once possessed two pairs of arms and legs, were proud of themselves and considered themselves equal to God. As a punishment, they were divided into two parts – male and female. Since then, each of these parts has been forced to search for its soul mate.
The main theme of the ballet is the tests that androgynes have to go through. The romantic and mystical story is told with the help of gothic decorations, modern choreography and, of course, music – Antonio Vivaldi and Max Richter. The name of the ballet is inspired by the classic 1931 horror film Dracula.
