Earth, Wind & Fire (abbreviated EW&F or EWF) is an American band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1969. The group’s music spans multiple genres including jazz, R&B, soul, funk, disco, pop, Latin, and Afro-pop. Founded by Maurice White and originating from the Salty Peppers, the band became one of the best-selling acts ever, with over 90 million records sold worldwide. The ensemble is distinctly characterized by its kalimba sound, dynamic horn section, energetic stage performances, and the vocal contrast between Philip Bailey’s falsetto and Maurice White’s tenor.
Earth, Wind & Fire’s accolades include six Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the NAACP Image Award Hall of Fame, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
