About Hooverphonic
Biography / Discography
Hooverphonic is a Belgian electronic pop and trip-hop band formed in Sint-Niklaas in October 1995, originally performing as Hoover before adopting their current name in 1997. The band—anchored by bassist and programmer Alex Callier, guitarist Raymond Geerts, and vocalist Geike Arnaert (who has fronted the group since 1997 and returned in 2020 after a hiatus)—pioneered a distinctive sound fusing trip-hop beats, orchestral arrangements, and indie pop sensibilities that emerged from the mid-1990s Belgian electronic music scene.
Their discography spans three decades, beginning with A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular (1996) and continuing through commercially successful albums including Blue Wonder Power Milk (1998), The Magnificent Tree (2000), and Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane (2002), which won the ZAMU Music Award for Best Album. The band has released numerous subsequent works, most recently Fake Is the New Dope (2024). Notable singles include “2Wicky,” “Eden,” “Mad About You,” and “Release Me.”
Hooverphonic achieved international recognition when they performed at the 2000 European Football Championship opening ceremony, viewed by over one billion spectators globally. In 2001, they became the first Belgian band to headline the Rock Werchter festival. The group represented Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, finishing 19th with 74 points. Their music has been featured in film and television, and they continue touring extensively across Europe and internationally.
