About Kool and the Gang
Biography / Discography
Kool & the Gang is an American funk, soul and R&B band formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964 by brothers Robert ‘Kool’ Bell and Ronald Bell, along with Dennis ‘Dee Tee’ Thomas, Robert ‘Spike’ Mickens, Charles Smith, George ‘Funky’ Brown, Woodrow ‘Woody’ Sparrow and Ricky Westfield. The group has drawn from diverse musical styles throughout their career, including jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, disco, rock and pop.
The band achieved their initial mainstream success in 1973 with the album Wild and Peaceful, featuring US top-ten singles ‘Jungle Boogie’ and ‘Hollywood Swinging’. Following a period of reduced activity, they entered a major resurgence between 1979 and 1986 through collaboration with Brazilian producer Eumir Deodato and vocalist James ‘J.T.’ Taylor. This era produced their best-selling albums Ladies’ Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980) and Emergency (1984), along with major hits including ‘Celebration’ (a US number-one single), ‘Get Down on It’, ‘Joanna’, ‘Misled’ and ‘Cherish’.
Kool & the Gang have received two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. Additional honors include a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, the Soul Train Legend Award and recognition in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. The group’s catalogue comprises 23 studio albums and nearly 70 singles, with worldwide sales exceeding 70 million albums.
