About Kungs
Biography / Discography
Kungs, the stage name of French DJ and producer Valentin Brunel (born December 17, 1996), is a tropical house and deep house artist best known for his 2016 international hit ‘This Girl.’ A native of Toulon, Kungs combines electronic dance music production with house sensibilities, creating atmospheric tracks that achieved significant mainstream recognition early in his career.
Brunel chose his stage name ‘Kungs’ from a Latvian word meaning ‘mister,’ selected after searching online for translations of ‘gentleman’ in various languages. He began musical training at age five, learning djembe as a young student, and developed early appreciation for rock and roll classics such as The Who and The Kooks through his father’s influence. At seventeen, he began writing and posting original compositions online. His reworking of Bob Marley’s ‘Jamming’ and Lana Del Rey’s ‘West Coast’ accumulated millions of plays; his remix of Lost Frequencies’ ‘Are You with Me’ exceeded 16 million YouTube views.
Kungs’ breakthrough came with his 2016 collaboration ‘This Girl’ with Cookin’ on 3 Burners, which reached number one in France, Germany, and Switzerland and number two on the UK Singles Chart. He released his debut album Layers in November 2016, featuring singles ‘Don’t You Know’ with Jamie N Commons and ‘I Feel So Bad’ with Ephemerals. He has since performed at major festivals including Ultra Music Festival in Miami (2018) and Tomorrowland in Belgium (2018).
