About Matia Bazar
Biography / Discography
Matia Bazar, also spelled Matia Bazaar, is an Italian pop and pop-rock band formed in Genoa in 1975. The founding lineup featured vocalist Antonella Ruggiero alongside Piero Cassano on keyboards, Carlo Marrale on guitar and vocals, Aldo Stellita on bass and Giancarlo Golzi on drums. The group built its identity around lush vocal arrangements and a sound that moved between melodic pop, disco-inflected rock and, later, electronic textures.
The band represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 with Raggio di Luna and won the Sanremo Music Festival in 1978 with Solo Tu, returning to win it again in 2002. Other well-known singles include Vacanze Romane from 1982 and Ti Sento from 1985, both staples of Italian pop radio and enduring live favorites across continental Europe.
Ruggiero left for a solo career in 1989 and Marrale departed in 1994, with keyboardist Fabio Perversi joining in 1998 and later leading the group through further lineup changes following the deaths of Stellita in 1998 and Golzi in 2015 and Cassano’s departure in 2017. Across five decades Matia Bazar has released more than a dozen studio albums and remains active on the Italian live circuit, available to book for festivals, corporate events and private shows.
