About Max Raabe
Biography / Discography
Max Raabe (born Matthias Otto) is a German vocalist and founder of the Palast Orchester, an orchestra specializing in vintage entertainment music from the 1920s and 1930s. Established in 1985, the ensemble has become internationally recognized for performing contemporary hits and creating original compositions in the style of pre-war German dance and film music.
Raabe studied music at Berlin University of the Arts and formed the Palast Orchester with eleven fellow students, initially using vintage arrangements sourced from flea markets. Following their acclaimed public debut at the 1987 Berliner Theaterball, the orchestra achieved commercial success with their 1992 signature composition. Beyond historical recreations, the ensemble reimagines works by contemporary artists including ABBA, Britney Spears, and Tom Jones through a 1920s-1930s lens while developing original material in the same style.
The orchestra has released over 40 albums since 1988 on major labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, and RCA. International recognition includes multiple Carnegie Hall performances beginning in 2005, American touring from 2004, and appearances in television and film including the 2022 series Babylon Berlin.
