Moby, the stage name of Richard Melville Hall, is an American electronic music producer and DJ. Born September 11, 1965, in Harlem, New York, Moby emerged as a prominent figure in dance and electronic music during the early 1990s. He is best known for his 1999 album Play, which unexpectedly became a global phenomenon in 2000, selling over 12 million copies and bringing electronic dance music to mainstream audiences worldwide.
Moby’s career began in the 1980s, initially playing guitar and piano before transitioning to electronic music. His breakthrough came in 1991 with the single “Go,” which achieved significant chart success in Europe. Beyond Play, Moby’s diverse discography spans electronic, ambient, dance, house, and rock-influenced styles. The track “South Side” from Play, featuring vocalist Gwen Stefani, reached number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2021, Deutsche Grammophon commissioned Reprise, an orchestral reworking of his catalogue recorded with The Budapest Art Orchestra, demonstrating his continued artistic evolution and interest in classical music collaborations.
