About Richard Marx
Biography / Discography
Richard Noel Marx is an American singer-songwriter born in Chicago on September 16, 1963. As a performer, he achieved 14 number-one singles on the Billboard charts and sold over 30 million albums worldwide. As a songwriter and producer, he has authored multiple chart-topping hits that have reached number one status across various Billboard charts in each of the last four decades.
Marx’s career took shape as a songwriter in 1984 when “What About Me?” (recorded by Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, and James Ingram) topped the US and Canadian Adult Contemporary charts. His self-titled debut album in 1987 achieved triple-platinum status in the United States, with his opening single “Don’t Mean Nothing” reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Between 1987 and 1994, Marx established a distinctive chart presence with 14 top 20 hits, including three number one singles. He remains the only male solo artist in history whose first seven singles all reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100.
Marx’s signature solo hits include “Right Here Waiting,” “Hold On to the Nights,” “Endless Summer Nights,” “Satisfied,” and “Hazard.” Beyond his solo recording career, Marx has gained recognition as a prolific songwriter and producer, collaborating with notable artists including Luther Vandross (co-writing the Grammy Award-winning “Dance with My Father”) and NSYNC (writing “This I Promise You”).
