About Shalamar
Biography / Discography
Shalamar is an American R&B and soul vocal group created by Dick Griffey and Don Cornelius in 1977 in Los Angeles. The classic and most commercially successful lineup consisted of lead vocalist Howard Hewett, vocalist and dancer Jody Watley, and vocalist and guitarist Jeffrey Daniel. Originally formed as a disco-driven group featuring session singers, Shalamar quickly evolved into an influential dance group after Griffey and Cornelius replaced the original lineup with popular Soul Train dancers Watley and Daniel.
The group achieved major chart success from 1979 onwards, scoring multiple platinum and gold albums in the United States and United Kingdom. Notable studio albums include Big Fun (1979), Three for Love (1980), Friends (1982), and The Look (1983). The classic trio achieved significant international success with singles including “The Second Time Around” (1979), “Take That to the Bank” (1978), “I Owe You One” (1980), and “Friends” (1982). Jeffrey Daniel’s innovative body-popping and choreography, later co-developed with Michael Jackson, helped establish the group as style trendsetters in the 1980s. The classic lineup disbanded in 1983 following internal conflicts, though subsequent iterations of the group continued to record and perform through the 1990s.
Shalamar reunited in 1996 for a performance on Babyface’s cover of “This Is for the Lover in You,” marking their first live performance together since breaking up. Howard Hewett and Jeffrey Daniel reformed the group in 1999, and since 2001 have performed regularly with Carolyn Griffey as a touring unit. The group has remained active in concert performances across the UK, Europe, North America, and Africa, earning a Music Walk of Fame stone in Camden in September 2023 in recognition of their lasting cultural impact on dance music and popular entertainment.
