About The O’Jays
Biography / Discography
The O’Jays are an American R&B and soul group formed in Canton, Ohio in 1958. Originally performing under different names—The Mascots and The Triumphs—the group adopted their current name in 1963 as a tribute to Cleveland radio disc jockey Eddie O’Jay. The original lineup included Eddie Levert, Walter Lee Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey, and Bill Isles, all high school students at the time. The ensemble became known for their distinctive Philadelphia soul, progressive soul, and disco sound.
Though the group achieved early chart presence with the minor hit ‘Lonely Drifter’ in 1963, they remained relatively obscure throughout the 1960s. Their breakthrough came following a 1971 partnership with producers Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International label. In 1972 they released their breakthrough album, and in 1973 they topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Love Train,’ establishing themselves as one of the era’s most commercially successful acts. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, they produced multiple platinum and gold-certified albums, becoming icons of soul and R&B music.
The O’Jays received extensive recognition for their contributions to music, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2005), the Vocal Group Hall of Fame (2004), and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame (2013). Their signature songs have earned Grammy Hall of Fame recognition, cementing their legacy as one of the most influential vocal groups in American popular music.
