About The Strumbellas
Biography / Discography
The Strumbellas are a Canadian rock band formed in 2008 in Lindsay, Ontario. The ensemble blends indie rock, alternative country, gothic folk, and pop rock influences, featuring Simon Ward (original vocals/guitar), David Ritter (vocals/keys), Jon Hembrey (lead guitar), Isabel Ritchie (violin), Darryl James (bass), and initially Jeremy Drury (drums). The group’s distinctive sound earned attention early, with their self-titled EP (2009) and debut album My Father and the Hunter (2012)—nominated for a Juno Award—establishing their presence in Canada’s indie rock landscape.
We Still Move on Dance Floors (2013) won a Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year, confirming their folk-rock credentials. Their third album, Hope (2016), produced the breakthrough single “Spirits,” which topped the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in May 2016 and earned a 2017 Juno for Single of the Year. The band’s growing profile led to televised performances including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and appearances at major festivals such as Bonnaroo and Governor’s Ball.
Since 2022, Simon Ward transitioned to behind-the-scenes work, with Jimmy Chauveau taking over vocal duties. The current active lineup comprises David Ritter, Darryl James, Isabel Ritchie, Jon Hembrey, and Jimmy Chauveau, with Miles Gibbons as touring drummer. Recent releases include Part Time Believer (February 2024) and the EP Burning Bridges Into Dust (October 2025). The band is available to book for festivals, corporate events, and private shows.
