About Brand New Heavies
Biography / Discography
The Brand New Heavies are an English acid jazz and funk band formed in 1985 in Ealing, London, consisting of core members Simon Bartholomew, Andrew Levy, and Jan Kincaid. The group pioneered the acid jazz genre, a fusion of jazz, funk, and hip-hop elements, and have become one of the most recognized acts in the style, with over 2.5 million records sold worldwide.
The band released their self-titled debut album in June 1990, later reissued with vocals by American vocalist N’Dea Davenport in 1991. Their breakthrough came with the 1994 album Brother Sister, which peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart and achieved platinum certification. This album spawned the international hit “Dream On Dreamer” and established The Brand New Heavies as major figures in the emerging acid jazz movement. Subsequent albums Shelter (1997) and Get Used to It (2006) also achieved platinum status.
Throughout their career, the band has featured various female vocalists alongside their core male lineup, including Siedah Garrett, Carleen Anderson, and more recently Angela Ricci. The group experienced mainstream decline in the early 2000s but reunited with their original record label Delicious Vinyl in 2005, leading to a resurgence with Davenport’s return. The Brand New Heavies have remained active performers and released the studio album TBNH in 2019, continuing to perform live with their characteristic blend of acid jazz, funk, and electronic music.
