About David Sanborn
Biography / Discography
David William Sanborn was an American alto saxophonist born in Tampa, Florida on July 30, 1945, and passed away on May 12, 2024. A versatile musician who worked across jazz, smooth jazz, pop, R&B, and instrumental crossover genres, Sanborn is best known for his influential recordings that blended jazz sensibilities with accessible melodic pop and rhythm-and-blues elements.
Beginning his saxophone study at age 11, Sanborn released his debut solo album Taking Off in 1975, launching a prolific recording career that produced more than 20 albums. As a highly sought session musician, he performed on acclaimed albums by leading artists including Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Sting, the Eagles, James Brown, George Benson, Carly Simon, Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Rickie Lee Jones, Ween, and the Rolling Stones. This versatile session work cemented his reputation as a master instrumentalist capable of adapting to diverse musical contexts.
Sanborn won six Grammy Awards throughout his career, earning recognition as one of the most influential saxophonists of his era. In 2012, music critic Scott Yanow described him as “the most influential saxophonist on pop, R&B and crossover players of the past 20 years.” Though his name became synonymous with the smooth jazz radio format, Sanborn resisted genre limitations and maintained his focus on creative musicianship across multiple styles.
