About Chris de Burgh
Biography / Discography
Christopher John Davison, professionally known as Chris de Burgh, is an English singer-songwriter and musician born in Venado Tuerto, Argentina in 1948. He adopted his mother’s maiden name, de Burgh, as his stage name. De Burgh began his recording career in 1974, initially performing art rock influenced by progressive and folk traditions before evolving toward pop-oriented material. His early albums, including Spanish Train and Other Stories (1975) and Crusader (1979), developed a dedicated international following, particularly in continental Europe, Canada, and South America, though he achieved limited chart success in the UK and US during the 1970s.
De Burgh achieved breakthrough commercial success in the 1980s with The Getaway (1982) and Man on the Line (1984), followed by his signature ballad “The Lady in Red” released in summer 1986. The single became a global phenomenon, reaching number one in the UK and number three in the US, while its accompanying album Into the Light reached number two in the UK. He has sold over 45 million albums worldwide across 27 studio albums spanning five decades. Other notable works include the Christmas standard “A Spaceman Came Travelling” (1975) and the UK top-five hit “Missing You” from Flying Colours (1988).
De Burgh has maintained an active touring schedule with particular popularity in Norway and Brazil. He released the compilation album 50 in October 2024, marking five decades in the music industry.
