About Francis and the Lights
Biography / Discography
Francis and the Lights is an American electronic music ensemble founded by Francis Farewell Starlite in Oakland, California. The project melds electronic production with live vocal and instrumental performance, employing Starlite’s signature “Prizmizer” vocal layering technique. Known for collaborations with artists including Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, Justin Vernon, and Frank Ocean, the ensemble has established itself as a distinctive voice in contemporary pop and electronic music.
The project began in the mid-2000s, releasing two early EPs: Striking and A Modern Promise (2007-2008). Following production contributions to Drake’s “Karaoke” in 2010, the group gained wider exposure and toured extensively with major acts. Their breakthrough arrived in 2016 with the single “Friends,” featuring Bon Iver and Kanye West, preceding their debut studio album Farewell, Starlite!.
In subsequent years, Francis and the Lights contributed to Kanye West’s ye (2018) and the collaborative Kids See Ghosts project. The ensemble has maintained an active presence in recording and performance, with their work featured on major platform releases including a 2024 Netflix series.
