About Gladys Knight
Biography / Discography
Gladys Knight, born Gladys Maria Knight on May 28, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, is an American soul and R&B singer known as the Empress of Soul. She first rose to prominence fronting the family vocal group Gladys Knight and the Pips, which included her brother and cousins, before establishing herself as a solo recording artist.
Across her career Knight has scored two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, eleven number-one R&B singles, and six number-one R&B albums. She recorded the title theme for the 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill, and two of her recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for their lasting cultural significance. She has won seven Grammy Awards over the course of her recording career.
Knight has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, has been ranked among Rolling Stone’s greatest singers, and has received the National Medal of Arts and Kennedy Center Honors in recognition of her contribution to American music.
