About Jamiroquai
Biography / Discography
Jamiroquai is an English acid jazz and funk band formed in 1992 in London. The group is fronted by vocalist Jay Kay, who has remained the sole constant member throughout the band’s career while the surrounding lineup has undergone numerous changes. Emerging during the height of the London-based funk and acid jazz movement of the 1990s, Jamiroquai built their distinctive sound on groove-heavy arrangements that incorporate rock, disco, electronic, and Latin influences.
The band achieved mainstream success initially through Acid Jazz Records before signing to Sony. Under Sony, they released three UK number-one albums: Emergency on Planet Earth (1993), Synkronized (1999), and A Funk Odyssey (2001). Their 1996 album Travelling Without Moving holds the Guinness World Record as the best-selling funk album in history. The album’s lead single ‘Virtual Insanity’ became an international breakthrough, with its innovative music video winning Video of the Year at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards and establishing the band globally.
Jamiroquai’s 1998 single ‘Deeper Underground’ reached number one in the UK and earned the band a Grammy Award. As of 2017, the group had sold more than 26 million albums worldwide, establishing them among the most commercially successful funk acts in modern music. The band continues to tour and record, maintaining their reputation for energetic live performances and socially conscious lyrics addressing environmental and social justice themes.
