About John Paul White
Biography / Discography
John Paul White is an American musician and singer-songwriter born August 4, 1972, in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, known for his work in Americana, folk, and country music. White achieved widespread recognition as one half of The Civil Wars, a Grammy Award-winning duo with vocalist Joy Williams formed in 2009. The duo released multiple albums including Barton Hollow (2011) and a self-titled album (2013), earning the Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2012 and accolades for Country Performance by a Duo or Group.
Following The Civil Wars’ activities, White launched a solo career with his debut album Beulah (2016). His subsequent album The Hurting Kind (2019) marked a stylistic shift toward traditional country music while retaining his Southern rock and Americana foundations. Beyond performance, White co-founded Single Lock Records in Florence, Alabama, an independent label that supports artists from the Muscle Shoals region.
White has contributed vocals to various collaborative projects including a duet with Emmylou Harris and work with producers including Dave Cobb and Rodney Crowell.
