About Kim Wan-Sun
Biography / Discography
Kim Wan-sun (Korean: 김완선) is a South Korean pop singer who emerged in the mid-1980s as a pioneer of dance-pop music, earning the epithet “Korean Madonna” and the title “dancing queen of Korean popular music’s renaissance era” for her energetic dancing and charismatic stage presence. She represents one of the first generation of Hallyu (Korean Wave) artists, achieving international success in Asia during the 1990s.
Kim debuted professionally in 1986 at age 17 with the album Tonight, marking a departure from the ballad-dominant K-pop landscape of the era. Her career quickly ascended with significant chart success and multiple award wins, including Rookie of the Year at the 1986 Golden Disc Awards and KBS Music Awards. Her fifth studio album, Pierrot Smiles at Us (1990), became a landmark release—the first album by a Korean female solo artist to exceed 1 million copies sold. After relocating to Taiwan in the mid-1990s to expand her presence across Asia, she released three Mandarin Chinese albums before returning to South Korea in 1996.
Following a lengthy hiatus in the early 2000s for personal and educational pursuits, Kim staged a career resurgence beginning in 2011. She has since returned to active recording, television appearances, and live performance, reconnecting with longtime audiences while building a new fanbase drawn to her foundational influence on Korean popular music and dance culture.
