About PUBLIC
Biography / Discography
PUBLIC (stylized in all caps, also written Public) is an American pop rock band formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2012. The trio consists of John Vaughn on lead vocals and guitar, Matthew Carter Alvarado on bass and synthesizers, and Ben Lapps on drums and percussion. The band is best known for its single “Make You Mine,” which became a viral phenomenon on TikTok years after its original 2014 release.
Vaughn, Alvarado and Lapps met in high school in Cincinnati, where they played together in the school jazz orchestra before forming the group. PUBLIC launched officially in 2012 with the debut EP “Red,” following a local battle-of-the-bands win that connected them with an artist development representative. The band built a national following by touring in support of acts including Walk the Moon, Twenty One Pilots, AJR, Jesse McCartney, Young the Giant and The Driver Era.
“Make You Mine,” written by Vaughn, resurfaced in 2019 when it inspired the “Make You Mine Challenge” and was used in more than a million TikTok videos, leading PUBLIC to sign with Island Records and release an expanded three-track version of the single. The band’s EP discography also includes “Let’s Remake It” (2015), “Sweet Lemonade” (2017) and “Three Hearts” (2022), alongside singles such as “Honey in the Summer,” “Splash” and “Missing You Today.” PUBLIC is available to book for festivals, corporate events and private shows.
