About Shantel
Biography / Discography
Stefan Hantel, known professionally as Shantel, is a German DJ and electronic music producer born March 2, 1968, in Mannheim and based in Frankfurt. He is recognized for his innovative blend of electronic production with traditional Balkan and Romani brass music, creating a distinctive sound that gained significant popularity across Europe and Turkey.
Shantel’s career began in Frankfurt, where he founded the Bucovina Club, a DJ night that became legendary in world music circles. The compilations from his Bucovina Club events were released on his own Essay label and won the Club Global award at the 2006 BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music. He was inspired by Romani brass orchestras such as Fanfare Ciocârlia and trumpeter Boban Marković, leading him to remix recordings by groups including Taraf de Haïdouks and Kočani Orkestar on the Electric Gypsyland compilations for Crammed Discs.
His 2007 album Disko Partizani marked a shift toward more organic Balkan roots while maintaining electronic elements, and achieved platinum status in Turkey. In 2011, he collaborated with musician Oz Almog on Kosher Nostra Jewish Gangsters Greatest Hits, exploring swing, jazz, and Yiddish music traditions. Shantel’s catalog encompasses electronic, world, and Balkan music genres.
