About Steely Dan
Biography / Discography
Steely Dan is an American rock band formed in 1971 in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, by core members Walter Becker (guitars, bass, backing vocals) and Donald Fagen (keyboards, lead vocals), who met as students at Bard College. The group built a distinctive sound blending rock with jazz harmony, Latin rhythms, R&B, and blues, paired with densely produced arrangements and ironic, literate lyrics that set them apart from mainstream 1970s rock acts.
The band released its debut album, Can’t Buy a Thrill, in 1972, and went on to record a string of studio albums through the decade, including Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, and their commercial and critical peak, Aja, in 1977. Steely Dan disbanded in 1981 following the album Gaucho before reuniting for live touring in 1993. The band returned to the studio with Two Against Nature in 2000, which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and released its final studio album, Everything Must Go, in 2003.
Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and has sold more than 40 million records worldwide. The act continued to tour regularly after Becker’s death in 2017, with Fagen leading the band. Steely Dan is available to book for festivals, corporate events, and private shows.
