About T. Rex
Biography / Discography
T. Rex, originally known as Tyrannosaurus Rex, was a British glam rock band formed in London in 1967. Led by Marc Bolan as singer, songwriter, and guitarist, the band evolved from an acoustic psychedelic folk outfit into a pioneering force in glam rock. By 1970, they had shortened their name and fully committed to their electric sound, becoming central to the glam rock movement’s emergence.
T. Rex achieved peak commercial success between 1970 and 1973, becoming one of the most successful UK acts of that era. The band produced eleven top 10 singles on the UK charts, four of which reached number one: “Hot Love,” “Get It On,” “Telegram Sam,” and “Metal Guru.” Their 1971 landmark album Electric Warrior defined the glam rock sound, while their 1972 release The Slider marked their strongest US performance, reaching the top 20.
Following the initial glam rock period, T. Rex continued to evolve, incorporating soul, funk, gospel, and disco influences into their music during the mid-1970s. The band disbanded following Marc Bolan’s death in 1977, but their influence on rock music remained substantial. T. Rex was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, cementing their legacy as one of the most important rock bands of the 1970s.
