About Tears For Fears
Biography / Discography
Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath in 1981 by Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. Emerging from the dissolution of their first band, Graduate, the duo became central figures in the synth-pop movement of the 1980s and achieved international chart success as part of the Second British Invasion. Their 1983 debut album, The Hurting, reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, launching hit singles “Mad World”, “Change”, and “Pale Shelter” into the top five of the UK Singles Chart. The band achieved unprecedented US success with their 1985 album Songs from the Big Chair, which topped the Billboard 200 and achieved multi-platinum status in both the US and UK. The album produced two US number one singles: “Shout” and “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, the latter winning the Brit Award for Best British Single in 1986.
Their third album, The Seeds of Love (1989), debuted at number one on the UK chart and yielded the transatlantic top five hit “Sowing the Seeds of Love”. Following the 1990 tour supporting this album, the band members pursued separate projects, with Orzabal continuing the Tears for Fears name as a solo venture and releasing Elemental (1993) and Raoul and the Kings of Spain (1995). Orzabal and Smith reunited in 2000 and released Everybody Loves a Happy Ending in 2004, subsequently touring on a semi-regular basis. In 2021, the duo received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection in recognition of their era-defining work and innovative hit singles. After nearly a decade of development, their seventh album, The Tipping Point (2022), marked their sixth UK top five entry and their highest chart position in thirty years.
