About Yello
Biography / Discography
Yello is a Swiss electronic duo formed in Zurich in 1979, consisting of Boris Blank (keyboards, sampling, production) and vocalist Dieter Meier. The group pioneered a distinctive approach to electronic music characterized by unconventional samples, propulsive rhythms, and Meier’s distinctive vocal delivery. The band’s international breakthrough came with their 1985 single “Oh Yeah,” which became ubiquitous in film and television, appearing prominently in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Secret of My Success, Uncle Buck, and numerous other productions.
Following the 1983 departure of founding member Carlos Perón, the group solidified their classic duo lineup. Yello released their debut album Solid Pleasure in 1980, establishing their signature production aesthetic, and achieved their first Swiss chart-topper with Stella in 1985. Subsequent releases including One Second (1987) and Flag (1988) further refined their sound, with “The Race” from Flag reaching number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. The band has released 14 studio albums across four decades, from 1980 through 2020.
Boris Blank’s production methodology is built on an extensive, personally developed library of sampled and re-engineered sounds, a technique that shaped electronic music production in subsequent decades. The band received recognition as Best-Selling Swiss Group at the 1990 World Music Awards and has maintained an active touring presence.
