About Arabesque
Biography / Discography
A German girl group that emerged in 1977 from Frankfurt am Main, Arabesque became one of the most successful European acts of the disco era. The group’s membership evolved over time, with Sandra Lauer joining as lead vocalist in 1979 at just seventeen years old. Their sophisticated euro-disco productions achieved exceptional commercial appeal throughout Asia, particularly Japan and South Korea, as well as across Eastern Europe and Latin America, making them a pivotal act in introducing Western pop music to East Asian markets in the early 1980s.
Between 1978 and 1984, Arabesque released a series of studio albums including Friday Night, City Cats, Marigot Bay, and Time to Say Goodbye. Despite achieving only modest commercial traction in their home market—though ‘Marigot Bay’ did reach the Top 10 in Germany—the group enjoyed significantly greater success on the international stage. Japanese audiences in particular embraced their work through late-night radio programming that began in the late 1970s, propelling Arabesque to the forefront of the Western music boom that swept through Japan and neighboring Asian markets during that period.
Following their 1984 breakup, Arabesque underwent a revival in 2006 when original member Michaela Rose reformed the group with new personnel. The reconstituted ensemble has since performed extensively across multiple continents, appearing at festival events and venues worldwide. Recent iterations continue to record updated versions of their classic catalog, preserving the distinctive sound that made them icons of the disco era.
