About Aswad
Biography / Discography
Aswad are a British reggae group formed in London in 1975. Renowned for blending reggae with strong R&B and soul influences, they released 21 studio albums and earned three Grammy Award nominations. The group achieved major commercial success with their UK number one single ‘Don’t Turn Around’ (1988, originally a Tina Turner B-side) and the European hit ‘Shine’ (1994). Over five decades, Aswad developed a distinctive sound addressing the lived experiences of Black British youth, positioning them as pioneers in British reggae.
Aswad’s early work emphasized roots reggae with socially conscious songwriting. Following their commercial breakthrough with the 1981 album New Chapter, they expanded their creative range with reggae versions of established tracks: The Eagles’ ‘Best of My Love’ and The Police’s ‘Invisible Sun’ (1998, performed with Sting). The band served as backing musicians for Burning Spear’s celebrated 1977 Live album and has toured extensively across West Africa, Israel, Japan, and Europe, including performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Jamaica’s Reggae Sunsplash, and the Notting Hill Carnival.
Aswad was founded by Brinsley ‘Chaka B’ Forde (guitar, vocals), Angus ‘Drummie Zeb’ Gaye (drums, vocals), Donald ‘Dee’ Griffiths (guitar), George ‘Ras’ Oban (bass), and Courtney ‘Khaki’ Hemmings (keyboards). Tony Robinson (bass, keyboards) joined in 1976 and remained central to the group’s evolution and continuation. Their final studio album, City Lock, was released in 2009.
