About Baccara
Biography / Discography
Baccara is a Spanish female vocal duo formed in Madrid in 1977 by María Mendiola and Mayte Mateos. The duo achieved rapid international success with their debut single “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie,” which reached number one across much of Europe and became the best-selling single of all time by a female duo, with over 16 million copies sold worldwide. Their music blended disco, pop, and Spanish folk influences, establishing them as major chart contenders in the late 1970s.
Following their breakthrough success, Baccara released the hit single “Sorry, I’m a Lady” and were selected to represent Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1978. The duo completed several European tours and made numerous television appearances throughout the late 1970s. However, by 1981, as disco fell from fashion, their commercial momentum declined significantly, and the original lineup disbanded.
Both Mendiola and Mateos continued their musical careers separately, each fronting their own versions of Baccara during the 1980s and beyond. Mendiola’s incarnation recorded Hi-NRG club hits including “Fantasy Boy,” “Call Me Up,” and “Touch Me,” while Mateos’ version maintained an active touring schedule, particularly in Spain and Germany. Both principals have maintained legacy careers performing the duo’s iconic back-catalogue to devoted audiences worldwide.
