About China Crisis
Biography / Discography
China Crisis are an English new wave and synth-pop band formed in Kirkby, near Liverpool, in 1979. The band’s core lineup consists of lead vocalist and keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist and vocalist Eddie Lundon. Initially influenced by post-punk and Brian Eno’s ambient soundscapes, the band evolved into a commercially successful synth-pop act that achieved significant chart presence throughout the 1980s.
The band signed to Virgin Records in 1982 and released their debut album Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It’s Fun to Entertain in November 1982. Their breakthrough came with the single “Christian” in 1983. Their second album, Working with Fire and Steel – Possible Pop Songs Volume Two (1983), established their commercially accessible synth-pop sound, incorporating synthesizers alongside brass and woodwind instruments. The album reached the UK top 20 and spawned the international hit “Wishful Thinking,” which reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart in 1984, becoming their only UK top 10 single.
Their third studio album, Flaunt the Imperfection (1985), was produced by Walter Becker of Steely Dan and reached number 9 on the UK Albums Chart. The album generated significant hits, including “Black Man Ray” (UK No. 14) and “King in a Catholic Style” (UK No. 19). During their peak years, China Crisis achieved ten top-50 singles and three albums charting in or just outside the UK top 20. The band released further studio albums including What Price Paradise (1986), Diary of a Hollow Horse (1989), and Warped by Success (1994), though with diminishing commercial success.
