About Chris Norman
Biography / Discography
Christopher Ward Norman is an English soft rock singer born on 25 October 1950 in Redcar. He is best known as the original lead singer of the rock band Smokie and for his 1978 duet “Stumblin’ In” with Suzi Quatro, which reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became a major international hit.
Norman formed Smokie in the early 1970s with fellow musicians Alan Silson, Terry Uttley, and Pete Spencer. The band achieved significant success touring worldwide between 1974 and the early 1980s, establishing itself as one of Europe’s leading rock acts during the 1970s. As principal songwriter and vocalist, Norman helped define Smokie’s distinctive blend of rock and soft rock influences.
Following Smokie’s initial hiatus in 1986, Norman launched a successful solo career. His debut solo single “Midnight Lady” became a major European hit, reaching number one in Germany and selling approximately 900,000 copies. Subsequent releases including “Some Hearts Are Diamonds,” “No Arms Can Ever Hold You,” and “Fearless Hearts” further established his solo presence. He has released over 20 studio albums since 1982, with Junction 55 arriving in 2024.
Norman has maintained an active touring schedule throughout his career, with particular popularity in Eastern Europe and the Baltic countries since the 1990s. He was honoured by CMT Europe as International Video Star of the Year in 1994. Available to book for festivals, tours, and special events.
