About Dr Alban
Biography / Discography
Dr. Alban (born Ogbuagu Alban Uzoma Nwapa, 26 August 1957) is a Nigerian-Swedish solo musician and producer who founded his record label Dr. Records. Working primarily in Eurodance, Europop, and dancehall styles, he achieved global commercial success in the early 1990s and has sold an estimated 16 million records worldwide. He is best known for his 1992 international hit “It’s My Life” from the album One Love.
Dr. Alban’s breakthrough came in 1990 when he collaborated with producer Denniz Pop and rapper Leila K on his debut album, releasing the hit single “Hello Afrika” as his stage name—a reference to his dental studies at Lund University. His second album One Love (1991) became his most successful work, with “It’s My Life” reaching number one in Israel, Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany, and selling over two million copies across Europe. The album achieved platinum certification in Austria and Switzerland and gold status in Germany. His third album Look Who’s Talking! (1994) continued his success across major European markets, earning him gold certification in Sweden.
Dr. Alban founded his own label in 1996 and released Born in Africa, though subsequent releases saw diminishing chart performance. Following years away from recording, he returned with the album Back to Basics in 2007. In recent decades, he has continued releasing new material and has remained active in music, including collaborations with other artists and remakes of his classic hits.
