About Don Henley
Biography / Discography
Donald Hugh Henley (born July 22, 1947) is an American rock singer, songwriter, and musician. He is a founding member of the Eagles, where he served as drummer, vocalist, and principal songwriter alongside Glenn Frey. Henley sang lead vocals on many of the band’s defining songs, including “Desperado,” “Best of My Love,” “One of These Nights,” “Hotel California,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” and “The Long Run.” The Eagles disbanded in 1980 but reunited in 1994, becoming the highest-selling American band in history with over 150 million albums sold worldwide and six Grammy Awards.
Following the Eagles’ initial breakup, Henley embarked on a solo career, releasing five studio albums between 1982 and 2015. His debut solo album, I Can’t Stand Still (1982), spawned the hit “Dirty Laundry,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent albums Building the Perfect Beast (1984) and The End of the Innocence (1989) produced additional chart successes, with “The Boys of Summer” reaching No. 5 and earning him a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Other notable solo tracks include “New York Minute,” “The Heart of the Matter,” and “Taking You Home.” As a solo artist, Henley has sold over 10 million albums, won two Grammy Awards and five MTV Video Music Awards, and achieved eight top 40 singles.
Beyond his music career, Henley has been active in environmental and political causes. In 1990, he founded the Walden Woods Project to protect Henry David Thoreau’s historic property in Massachusetts. He also co-founded the Caddo Lake Institute in 1993 to protect Texas wetlands, and in 2000 co-founded the Recording Artists’ Coalition to advocate for musicians’ rights against unfair music industry practices.
