About Dschinghis Khan
Biography / Discography
Dschinghis Khan is a German Eurodisco pop band formed in Munich in 1979. The original six-member ensemble included Louis Hendrik Potgieter, Edina Pop, Henriette Strobel, Wolfgang Heichel, Leslie Mándoki, and Steve Bender. The band’s debut single ‘Dschinghis Khan’ achieved fourth place at the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem. The name references the historical Genghis Khan and typified the group’s theatrical presentation of disco and pop music during the era.
Commercial success peaked in the early 1980s with the single ‘Moskau,’ whose English version topped Australian charts for six weeks following use as the theme for Seven Network’s 1980 Summer Olympics coverage. The band released six studio albums between 1979 and 1985, with later recordings adopting folk-oriented arrangements. Dschinghis Khan disbanded in 1985 but reformed briefly in 1986 as ‘Dschinghis Khan Family,’ then reunited permanently in 2005 at Moscow’s Retro FM Festival.
The group has performed with various line-ups in subsequent decades, including a 2018 re-recording of ‘Moskau’ with new lyrics for the FIFA World Cup in Russia, which featured multiple language versions with international vocalists. Dschinghis Khan continues to perform at festivals and special events in Europe.
