Ellen Lucille “Evelyn” Thomas was an American singer and dance music performer from Chicago, best known for her hi-NRG and disco hits. Her signature track, “High Energy,” released in 1984, became an international breakthrough and remains her most iconic song.
Thomas launched her recording career in the mid-1970s after being discovered by British producer Ian Levine. Her first single, “Weak Spot,” reached the UK top 30 in 1976. Working with labels including 20th Century Records, Casablanca Records, and AVI Records, she built a career in dance music. Her most significant success came with “High Energy” in 1984, produced by Levine, which reached number one in Germany and number five in the UK. Other notable releases included “Masquerade,” a cover of the Supremes’ “Reflections,” and “How Many Hearts,” with several songs charting on the Billboard Dance chart.
Throughout the 1980s, Thomas recorded across multiple genres, including disco, Eurobeat, R&B, and dance. Her studio albums included “I Wanna Make It on My Own” (1978), “Have a Little Faith in Me” (1979), “High Energy” (1984), and “Standing at the Crossroads” (1986).
