About F R David
Biography / Discography
Elli Robert Fitoussi, professionally known as F. R. David, is a French singer, guitarist and musician born in 1947 in Bizerte, Tunisia. He is best known for his 1982 international hit single ‘Words’, which sold over eight million records worldwide and topped charts throughout Europe. The song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart in 1983 and became the 22nd best-selling single in the UK that year. The composition exemplifies his signature style—a melodic, synth-driven pop ballad delivered in his distinctive high-pitched vocals.
David’s professional music career began in the late 1960s in Paris under his real name. He was a member of several French rock and pop groups, including Les Trèfles, Les Boots, David Explosion, and Les Variations, and served as guitarist and vocalist for composer Vangelis during the early 1970s. Throughout this period, he recorded orchestral psychedelic pop material and achieved minor chart success with compositions including ‘Symphonie’ and a cover of the Bee Gees’ ‘Sir Geoffrey Saved the World’, before international prominence arrived with ‘Words’.
From the 1990s onward, David shifted his focus toward composing and producing music for other artists. He released the album Words – ’99 Version in 2000, followed by The Wheel in 2006, Numbers in 2009, and Midnight Drive in 2013. Between 2010 and 2011, he undertook a national French tour of 52 concerts. His iconic personal trademark—performing in signature sunglasses with a white Fender Stratocaster—remains recognizable across his career spanning five decades.
