About Harpo
Biography / Discography
Harpo, born Jan Torsten Svensson on April 5, 1950, is a Swedish pop singer whose stage name pays tribute to comedian Harpo Marx of the Marx Brothers. He began his career in children’s theatre in the late 1960s before moving into music, signing with Polar Music in 1972 under Stig Anderson, where he briefly worked alongside ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus on an unreleased children’s album project.
After moving to EMI and partnering with producer Bengt Palmers, Harpo released his breakthrough singles Honolulu and Sayonara in 1973, both reaching the Swedish top ten, with Sayonara holding the number one spot for five consecutive weeks. His biggest international hit, Moviestar, recorded in February 1975 and featuring ABBA’s Anni-Frid Lyngstad on backing vocals, topped the charts in Sweden, Norway, Austria, Switzerland and West Germany. The follow-up single Horoscope reached number one in Denmark and number three in Germany in 1976.
Harpo continued recording through the 1980s and 1990s, founded his own label, Igloo Records, in 1987, and released new material as recently as 2005. He has remained particularly popular in Germany, where he has toured regularly since 2007. Harpo is available to book for concerts, festivals and private events.
