About Jimmy Somerville
Biography / Discography
Jimmy Somerville is a Scottish singer who achieved international prominence as the lead vocalist of two seminal synth-pop bands: Bronski Beat and the Communards. Born James William Somerville in 1961, he rose to prominence in the 1980s when synth-pop was reshaping popular music globally.
Somerville first achieved major success with Bronski Beat, whose 1984 debut album The Age of Consent introduced the single ‘Smalltown Boy’, a landmark hit that peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and achieved significant international success. After leaving the band in 1985, Somerville joined the Communards, releasing their self-titled debut album in 1986. The Communards’ signature single ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ became the best-selling single of 1986 in the United Kingdom, establishing Somerville as one of the decade’s defining vocal talents. The band’s second album Red (1987) yielded further chart success including ‘So Cold the Night’ before disbanding in 1988.
Following the Communards’ dissolution, Somerville embarked on a solo career, maintaining an active presence in both the recording and touring landscape. His distinctive vocal performance and songwriting contributions across these high-profile synth-pop projects left an enduring mark on 1980s popular music.
