About Kid Creole and the Coconuts
Biography / Discography
Kid Creole and the Coconuts is an American musical group established in 1980 by August Darnell alongside co-founders Andy Hernandez (also known as Coati Mundi) and Adriana Kaegi. The ensemble blends disco, funk, and Latin music with Caribbean and big band swing influences, presented through theatrical 1930s-40s staging and dance choreography. The Coconuts themselves are a backing vocal and dance ensemble, originally choreographed and styled by Kaegi.
The group achieved breakthrough commercial success with their third album Tropical Gangsters in 1982, which reached number three on the UK charts. The album spawned three UK top-ten singles: “Stool Pigeon,” “Annie, I’m Not Your Daddy,” and “I’m A Wonderful Thing, Baby,” establishing Kid Creole and the Coconuts as distinctive crossover artists. Earlier releases Off the Coast of Me (1980) and Fresh Fruit in Foreign Places (1981) earned critical respect despite modest sales.
Kid Creole and the Coconuts remained active recording and touring through the 1990s and 2000s. Notable collaborations included 1987’s “Hey Mambo” with Barry Manilow (their only US chart entry) and 1990’s “The Sex of It,” recorded at Paisley Park with Prince. Following a decade-long recording break after 2001’s Too Cool to Conga!, the group re-emerged in 2011 with the album I Wake Up Screaming. August Darnell continues to perform and tour with the current incarnation of the Coconuts worldwide.
