About Laid Back
Biography / Discography
Laid Back is a Danish electronic music duo formed in Copenhagen in 1979 by John Guldberg and Tim Stahl. The duo pioneered a distinctive blend of synthpop, pop reggae, and electronic dance music that achieved significant international success, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s.
The band’s breakthrough came with their 1982 single “Sunshine Reggae,” which topped charts in Denmark, Italy, West Germany, and nineteen other countries worldwide. Their follow-up single “White Horse” (1983) became a US club hit, reaching number one on Billboard’s Disco Action chart and number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. The duo’s 1989 single “Bakerman,” featuring Danish vocalist Hanne Boel, marked another chart success, peaking at number nine in West Germany. Laid Back released sixteen studio albums between 1981 and 2024, with notable works including Keep Smiling (1983), Play It Straight (1985), and Healing Feeling (2019).
Beyond recording, Laid Back has composed music for film and television, including the soundtrack for the 2001 feature film Flyvende Farmor, for which they received a Robert Award (the Danish equivalent of an Oscar). In 2019, the duo received the “Pioneer of the Year” award in recognition of four decades of contributions to international music. They continue to record and perform, maintaining their studio in Copenhagen where they have created music since 1979.
