About Leo Sayer
Biography / Discography
Gerard Hugh Sayer (born 21 May 1948) is an English singer and songwriter who rose to international prominence in the early 1970s. Known for his versatile blend of pop-rock, disco, and soft rock, Sayer achieved major commercial success throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. He is best known for “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing,” which won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Song in 1978 and reached number one on the US singles chart.
Launching his recording career in 1973 under the management of Adam Faith, Sayer achieved immediate success with “The Show Must Go On,” a music-hall styled single that reached number two on the UK singles chart. The song was notably covered by Three Dog Night, marking the group’s final top-10 record. His first seven UK hit singles all reached the top 10, an exceptional achievement that established him as a leading pop artist. During the late 1970s, Sayer’s career peaked with consecutive number-one hits in the United States: “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” (1977) and “When I Need You” (1977), while his albums Endless Flight (1976) and Thunder in My Heart (1977) achieved platinum certification internationally.
After experiencing financial setbacks in the 1990s and early 2000s, Sayer’s career revived in 2006 with a remix of “Thunder in My Heart,” which returned him to the UK number-one position nearly three decades after his previous chart-topper. He became an Australian citizen in 2009 and has continued to record and tour, releasing albums including Restless Years (2015), Selfie (2019), and 1992 (2024). His original compositions have been recorded by major artists including Cliff Richard and Roger Daltrey.
