About Mai Tai
Biography / Discography
Mai Tai is a Dutch synth-pop and euro-disco group formed in 1983 by record producers Eric van Tijn and Jochem Fluitsma with vocalists Jetty Weels, Mildred Douglas, and Caroline de Windt. The group specializes in electronic dance music, blending synthesizer-based production with distinctive vocal arrangements. Mai Tai achieved international prominence with ‘History’ (1984), which reached No. 8 in the UK Singles Chart, No. 3 on the US Billboard dance chart, and secured top 10 placements across multiple European countries and New Zealand.
The band released three studio albums during the 1980s: their self-titled debut (1984), ‘1 Touch 2 Much’ (1985), and ‘Cool Is the Rule’ (1987). Notable singles included ‘Body and Soul’ (1985, UK No. 9), ‘What Goes On’ (1984, Netherlands No. 24), and ‘Female Intuition’ (1986). The original lineup disbanded in 1988 after releasing a compilation album. The song ‘History’ gained renewed recognition when it was featured in the 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV.
Mai Tai reformed in 1993 and has performed intermittently since 2001, with various lineup changes throughout their reunion period. The group has appeared at major television events including the Eurovision Song Contest semi-finals and regularly performs at dance music festivals and retro 1980s events.
