About Marc Almond
Biography / Discography
Peter Mark Sinclair Almond, professionally Marc Almond, is an English synth-pop vocalist and singer-songwriter born in Southport in 1957. He rose to international prominence as the lead vocalist of the synth-pop duo Soft Cell, formed with keyboardist David Ball in 1977. The group achieved global fame with their 1981 single “Tainted Love”, a Northern Soul cover that became a defining track of the new wave and synth-pop era, reaching number one in the UK and numerous countries worldwide. After Soft Cell disbanded in 1984, Almond launched a diverse and prolific solo career.
Almond’s solo discography spans over three decades, comprising more than 30 studio albums. His 1989 duet with Gene Pitney, “Something’s Gotten Hold of My Heart”, reached number one in the UK, while “Tears Run Rings” charted in the US Billboard Hot 100. Other notable hits include “A Lover Spurned” and “The Days of Pearly Spencer”. Musically, Almond has incorporated pop, cabaret, electronic music, torch songs and world music traditions. He has collaborated with artists including Jools Holland, Nico and Siouxsie Sioux, with recordings that have sold over 30 million copies worldwide.
Almond was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2018 for his services to arts and culture. Soft Cell reunited for performances in 2001 and 2018, releasing new material as recently as 2022. Beyond his solo work, Almond has led additional projects including the Marc and the Mambas experimental collective and the rock band The Loveless, formed in 2019. He continues to tour extensively and is available for concert performances, festival appearances and touring engagements.
