About Martha Wash
Biography / Discography
Martha Elaine Wash is a San Francisco-born American singer and songwriter known for her distinctive, powerful voice and major role in dance music. Across her career spanning disco, house, and dance genres, Wash achieved 15 number-one songs on the Billboard dance chart, earning the title The Queen of Clubland and establishing herself among the most commercially successful recording artists in dance music history.
Wash first achieved recognition in the late 1970s as half of Two Tons O’ Fun alongside Izora Armstead, serving as a backing vocalist for disco artist Sylvester on hits including “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).” The duo signed to Fantasy Records in 1979 and released commercially successful dance singles. In 1982, they renamed themselves the Weather Girls and released the hit single “It’s Raining Men,” which reached number one on the dance chart and number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group released five albums before disbanding in 1988.
After 1988, Wash pursued a solo career centered on house music, becoming a featured vocalist on numerous successful dance recordings. Her solo albums include Martha Wash (1993), Something Good (2013), and Love & Conflict (2020). She has collaborated with artists and producers including C+C Music Factory, Todd Terry, RuPaul, and Linda Clifford, and co-founded First Ladies of Disco with Linda Clifford and Evelyn King. Her vocal style became a signature element of dance and house music productions throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
Wash’s career has been recognized as influential in dance music history. Rolling Stone ranked her at number 179 on its 2023 list of 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. Industry colleagues including RuPaul have acknowledged her influence in merging gospel-rooted vocals into dance and pop contexts.
