About Opus
Biography / Discography
Opus was an Austrian pop-rock band formed in 1973 in Graz. The four-piece ensemble—fronted by vocalist Herwig Rüdisser alongside guitarist Ewald Pfleger, keyboardist Kurt-Rene Plisnier, and drummer Günter Grasmuck—became best known for their 1985 global chart success with the single “Live Is Life”.
“Live Is Life” achieved Top 10 status across multiple European territories and reached number six on the UK Singles Chart in August 1985, remaining in the charts for 15 weeks. A live recording charted in North America, breaking into the US Top 40 in 1986. The single became embedded in popular culture, inspiring numerous cover versions by artists including Laibach and DJ Ötzi. Another signature work, the power ballad “Flyin’ High”, further demonstrated the band’s range and emotional depth.
Across four decades of activity, Opus released 13 studio albums beginning with 1980’s Daydreams through 2020’s Opus Magnum, alongside multiple live and compilation recordings. The band toured extensively across Europe and maintained a devoted international following throughout their career. Opus disbanded in December 2021 following their final public performance in November of that year.
