About Pentatonix
Biography / Discography
Pentatonix, often abbreviated as PTX, is an American a cappella group of five vocalists originating from Arlington, Texas. The current members are Scott Hoying (baritone lead), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano), Mitch Grassi (counter-tenor), Kevin Olusola (tenor and vocal percussion), and Matt Sallee (bass). The group formed in 2011 and achieved early prominence by winning the third season of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” which earned them a recording contract with Sony Music.
Pentatonix released their debut EP “PTX, Volume 1” in 2012, followed by the holiday album “PTXmas” the same year. Their discography includes the EPs “PTX, Vol. II” (2013), “PTX, Vol. III” (2014), and “PTX, Vol. IV – Classics” (2017), along with full-length albums including “That’s Christmas to Me” (2014), which achieved multi-platinum certification and became the highest-charting holiday album by a group since 1962. In 2015, they released their first album consisting mostly of original material, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. Pentatonix has won three Grammy Awards, becoming the first a cappella act to win the Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella in 2015. Their signature sound is characterized by strong low bass vocals, intricate vocal percussion, and sophisticated vocal arrangements of both covers and original works across pop and holiday music genres.
