About Phats & Small
Biography / Discography
Phats & Small (also known as Phats n Smalls) are a British electronic dance music duo formed in Brighton in 1998, comprising producers and remixers Jason “Phats” Hayward and Russell Small. The group emerged on the dance scene with their debut single “Turn Around” in 1998, which sampled Toney Lee’s “Reach Up” and Change’s “The Glow of Love”, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart and establishing them as significant figures in electronic music production.
The duo released their first album, “Now Phats What I Small Music” (a play on the “Now That’s What I Call Music!” compilation series), in 1999, featuring vocalist Ben Ofoedu on tracks including “Feel Good” and “Tonite”. That same year, they gained further recognition for high-profile remixes of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and Simply Red’s “Ain’t That a Lot of Love”. Following Ofoedu’s departure to pursue a solo career, Tony Thompson took over vocal duties for their second album, “This Time Around” (2001), co-produced with Jimmy Gomez. The group continued evolving through the 2000s, releasing “Soundtrack to Our Lives” in 2005 with vocalist Ryan Molloy and featuring the single “Sun Comes Out”.
Beyond their work as Phats & Small, Russell Small is a founding member of the production duo The Freemasons (with James Wiltshire). The group remains available for performances at festivals, corporate events, and private shows.
