About Styx
Biography / Discography
Styx is an American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1972. The band established themselves through a distinctive blend of progressive rock, hard rock, and theatrical elements, known for balancing melodic hard rock guitar with acoustic instrumentation, synthesizers mixed with acoustic piano, and blending upbeat tracks with power ballads. The classic lineup featured Dennis DeYoung on keyboards and vocals, James “J.Y.” Young on guitar and vocals, Tommy Shaw on guitar, and brothers Chuck and John Panozzo on bass and drums respectively.
Styx achieved major commercial success between 1977 and 1981 with a series of platinum albums. The Grand Illusion (1977) marked their breakthrough, while Pieces of Eight (1978) and Cornerstone (1979) solidified their status, the latter yielding their only No. 1 hit, the ballad “Babe.” Paradise Theatre (1981) became their biggest album, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spawning five singles including top 10 hits “The Best of Times” and “Too Much Time on My Hands.” The band embraced the rock opera form with Kilroy Was Here (1983), which reached the top 3 in North America, featuring the hit “Mr. Roboto” (No. 3 US) and “Don’t Let It End” (No. 6 US). Styx sold over 20 million records between 1975 and 1984, with eight songs reaching the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 16 top 40 singles overall.
After disbanding in 1984 and reforming briefly in 1990 with Edge of the Century, the band has reunited multiple times for touring and performances, remaining active in the classic rock touring circuit.
